EHC systems commonly use phosphate ester which can develop high TAN (total acid number) when exposed to water. The acid attacks the binding agent in Microgalss media. The result is lower efficiency and media migration, or fiber shedding, where the filter is generating contamination. Sintered steel filter media utilize sintered stainless steel fibers which are impervious to the acidic compounds that form in EHC systems.
